Samuel Peyton Winston, 62, of 35 Flynn St., Gladys, died Tuesday, June 18, 2002, in Lynchburg General Hospital. He was the husband of Kaye Walker Winston. Born June 15, 1940, in Campbell County, he was a son of the late Gladys Owen Winston and B. Alexander Winston Jr.
He was a member and chairman of the Administrative Council at Wesleybury United Methodist Church and charter member of the Gladys Volunteer Fire Department where he remained active and served on the board of directors. He was a Captain with the Blue Ridge Regional Jail Authority and was responsible for administering the Campbell County site. Sammy had been a dairy farmer for 28 years and was a former member of the U.S. Naval Reserves.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by three sons, David R. Winston of Blacksburg, W. Todd Jennings and his wife, Heidi of Hilliard, Ohio, and Bret L. Jennings of Richmond; three brothers, R. Addison Winston and his wife, Gerry of Roanoke, George A. Winston and his wife, Betty Joan of Brookneal, and William H. Winston of Gladys.
A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, June 21, 2002, in Wesleybury United Methodist Church, by the Rev. Charles Langley, the Rev. Pat Watkins, and the Rev. Kathy Carpenter. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at Finch & Finch, Inc. Funeral and Cremation Service, Gladys, and other times at the residence.
