The William Findley Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, which is celebrating its 90th anniversary, was named for an Irish-born soldier and patriot in the struggle of the American colonies for independence.

Born in the north of Ireland in 1741, William Findley came to America in 1763 and settled in Westmoreland County, PA. He was a descendant of a signer of the Solemn League and Convenant in Scotland, who was one of the defenders in the siege of Derry, Ireland.

William reached America in 1765; he was a Captain in the Revolutionary Army; an Elder in the Presbyterian Church; member of Congress from 1791-1799 and from 1803-1817. He was a confidential friend of President George Washington and the first man known as the "Father of Congress". He died April 15, 1821 and is buried at Unity Meeting House Cemetery in Latrobe, Westmoreland County,Pennsylvania.
