Troop Program at the Girl Scout First National Headquarters Building

The Girl Scout First National Headquarters building, a National Historic site in downtown Savannah, is open now for troops and groups to visit and to participate in programs based on early Girl Scout badges. Troops/groups are encouraged to schedule a program activity during their visit to Savannah. Please allow two weeks to schedule your visit. Include your payment with the enclosed registration form. Programs cost between $1.50-$3.00 per girl, and a minimum of $15 deposit to reserve a place per troop. The current offerings include:

Paper Quilt Squares

Ever wonder how to make a quilt? This program will show girls the first steps in designing a quilt. Become familiar with this old time craft by creating a paper quilt square of your own design. Enjoy this creative activity from the 1940's. This program costs $1.50 per girl.

Girl Scouting in the U.S.A.

What better place to earn this popular, current Girl Scout Badge than where Girl Scouting all began? Complete 5 activities, including a viewing of "The Golden Eaglet", and viewing selected old Girl Scout handbooks and uniforms from our museum. Cost is $1.50, badge not included in cost.

Seamstress

Learn a useful skill for sewing on all of your future patches. This workshop will teach the basics of sewing with a machine, and each girl will complete a sewing project based on this popular badge from teh 1950's. Cost is $3.00 per girl.

Signal Flags

They didn't use radios on the battlefield back in the 1860's...during this workshop girls will cut and sew two signal flags as represented in the 1953 Intermediate Girl Scout Handbook. Girls will learn to signal for help via Morse code with the flags, and how to send a written message via Morse Code. Cost per girl is $3.00.

Available at First Headquarters

* A self-directed tour brochure of Lafayette Square is also available. This brochure is a fill-in-the-blank learning experience of trees and shrubs around the square: a learning experience for Girl Scouts of any age! Cost is $.50 per brochure.

* Troops may also conduct a special ceremony in the reception area or courtyard. Reservation cost is $5.00 per troop. Make an appointment for an award ceremony today!
