Tybee Lighthouse
U.S. 80, 18 miles east of Savannah
Guardian of the Savannah River since 1736, the present 154-foot tall lighthouse is Georgia's oldest lighthouse and was rebuilt in 1887. Open to the public. Visitors enjoy the keeper's cottage, exhibits, and gift shop, as well as the climb to the top for a spectacular view. Admission charged. (912) 786-5801.
Tybee Museum (Fort Screven)
U.S. 80, 18 miles east of Savannah
Located in an 1897 Coastal Artillery Battery, the museum features exhibits of early life at Tybee, Indian and Civil War weaponry and dolls - from colonial days through WWII. The modern beach fort was built in 1875 and was manned during the Spanish-American War, WWI, and WWII. Open to the public. Admission charged. (912) 786-4077.
Tours by appointment only; admission free. The Laurel Grove-South Cemetery was dedicated in 1852 for the burial of free persons of color and slaves. Many of Savannah's most famous citizens (including Juliette Gordon Low), including a number of Georgia's earliest African-Americans, are buried here.
Built in 1848 for a wealthy cotton factor, or broker, this classically designed house holds museum-quality furnishings from the English Regency period of design.
Adult home of Juliette Gordon Low from 1886-1927. Acquired by the Colonial Dames in 1928. Carriage house in rear was a gift to Girl Scouts from Mrs. Low. Thirty-minute tours every half hour from 10:30-3:30. Cost of tour is $3/person.
