Ribbon Weaving Vests

As we thought and talked about how we can weave ourselves together as Girl Scouts and be more community focused, the girls wove beautiful, bright ribbon vests! An Art to Wear project in the making!!

The process was simple, which allowed the girls to spend countless hours designing their pattern selection and selecting their ribbons.

1. The pattern was traced onto a flat cardboard box. Straight of grain lines and diagonal lines were also traced.
2. Iron-on interfacing was laid, with the adhesive side up, and secured with T-pins on top of the cardboard box. The pattern was traced onto the interfacing with a permanent marker. No lines were drawn.
3. The girls selected 10-12 rolls of ribbon; not that they would use all of this ribbon, but it was their “palate” from which to design their vest.
4. The girls spent 2 meetings pinning and weaving their ribbons to the pattern using T-pins. Great fun!
5. Press carefully, using a press cloth, and removing the T-pins as you go along. You may find that some ribbons “shrink” as you press. These ribbons might have some plastic in them. Perhaps a better choice of ribbon would be grossgrain or satin, but fabric in nature.
6. Then, we sewed them up, using an inexpensive broadcloth.

Each vest reflects the personality of the girl - whether reserved and shy or an extrovert and bright! The girls will be wearing these vests during part of the program at Court of Awards! They are so proud of their creations and time investment!
