In 1871, after a trip West and after clerking for William Fultz near Fort Seybert, Mr. Bowman came to Franklin as a clerk in the store of Anderson Boggs and Co. After a few years he became a partner and was at length the senior member of the house of Bowman and McClure. His business activities were chiefly those of a careful and very successful merchant. He never sought political preferment, but for many years was a prominent, public-spirited and useful citizen. He was a member of the board of directors of the bank in Franklin. As a member of the M. E. C. S. he was zealous and diligent, being a steward, and in the Sunday school a teacher and treasurer. He came to Franklin penniless, but left his family in easy circumstances.

Darnell, John C. (Harriet W. Reed, Upshur)--Fln. Mr. Darnell has been in every state and territory of the Union and in Canada and Mexico as well. At the World's Fair in 1904 he received a gold medal on a floral design in silk needle work and sold the specimen to a silk manufacturer for $750. He retains other specimens of his remarkable skill, one of which, representing a dish of strawberries in life like colors, it took 400 hours to make. He is now in horticultural work. He is a son of Col. M. A. Darnell, of the 10th W. Va. Vol. Inf. One brother is postmaster at Buckharmon, and another was superintendent of the State Reform School for Boys. His wife is a grandniece to Admiral Semmes of the Confederate navy, and Semmes Read, lieut. in the U. S. navy.
