"Cead mile failte"
(A Hundred Thousand Welcomes)
St. Patrick
May St. Patrick guard you wherever
you go and guide you in
whatever you do--and may his loving
protection be a blessing to you always.
(Irish Blessing)
St. Patrick is an Irish hero. Unfotunately, St. Patrick wasn't even Irish, but he came to Ireland
and became a legend by converting the Irish masses to Christianity. He also made himself a hero by driving
the snakes out of Ireland. Most believe this is only symbolic of his driving paganism from Ireland.
Regardless of your beliefs, St. Patrick is a hero in Ireland. There are at least 60 churches and cathedrals named for him in Ireland alone with several also in America.
Because of his extraordinary efforts, the Irish celebrate his life on March 17th each year. This celebration has been adopted in many parts of the world, giving everyone the opportunity to be a wee bit Irish themselves on that day.
In America, many parades are held to celebrate St. Patrick's Day, the largest being in New York. We have also adopted the habit of drinking "green beer" on this day. Usually this consists of beer with a little food coloring to give it that "Irish" green look.
I hope that you will thoroughly enjoy "the wearin 'o the green" on March 17th!!
The Shamrock
There's a dear little plant that grows in our isle
'Twas Saint Patrick himself sure that set it
And the sun on his labor with pleasure did smile
And a tear from his eyes oft-times wet it
It grows through the bog, through the brake, through the mireland
And they call it the dear little Shamrock of Ireland
