world, and vessels often called in other ports en route, embarking extra
passengers. San Francisco ship passenger lists were formerly printed in the

"Servants to Foreign Plantations." Emigrants to New England, Maryland,
Virginia, New York, Pennsylvania, Canada, and the Caribbean Islands. The
information was transcribed by R. Hargreaves-Mawdsley, and occasionally the
work will be found under his name rather than "Bristol...." An index of 16
pages was issued in 1931 separately, but it is now incorporated in the
G.P.C. reprint. Pages 1-26 of Book 1 of "Servants to Foreign Plantations"
were also in no. 2899, Hargreaves-Mawdsley, and in nos. 3438 and 3440,
Gordon Ireland.

Barbados, and continental North America. Indexes family names. Names of
Jews are excerpted in Adler, no. 61. Care should be taken when using
Hotten. There are two versions, one with accurate text and index, the other
with poor text and the better index which does not entirely match the text.
Therefore it is essential that only the following editions be used: all
1874 printings; 1931, New York; 1935, New York; and the G.P.C. printings
from 1974 on. G.P.C.'s earlier printings had the poor text and the better
index.
