The following are snips from posts on the Combs-L
Discussion list (of which I am also a member).
Harveys and Combs have been intermarrying for a
long time, and a search of the Combs-L archives
will produce, to date, about 233 HARVEY hits. The
topic of today's post is, though, NICHOLAS HARVEY,
whom I believe may be of interest to several
researchers on the Harvey list. The original post
concerns the book:

"Colonial Settlers St. Clements Bay 1634 1780
St. Mary's County, Maryland" by Mary Louise
Donnely

Richard Gardiner acquired a 200 acre tract called
"Sacaweykitt" which
became home Plantation and 1,000 acre tract on
Patuxent River which he
named " St. Richard's". St. Richard's Manor was
granted in 1640, adjoining
the Sewell property "Mattapany," and one of the
first Manors established
under the conditions set forth by LORD BALTIMORE,
with "Court Leet and
Court Baron," The following Year "St. Joseph's
Manor" was granted to
Nicholas Harvey, a Passenger on the Ark and the
dove, on the other side of
" St. Richard's Manor." These Manors are all
listed with the 29 Manors
which make up the Society known as " The Son of
Lors of American Manors."

ST. MARY'S COUNTY MARYLAND COLONIAL PERIOD TENANTS
AND OWNERS
OF "BEAVERDAM MANOR" AND SURROUNDING MANORS By
Mary Louise Donnelly

Nicholas Harvey (1), a Catholic, arrived in St.
Mary's County on 3/25/1634
on the ARK and The DOVE. In Maryland records
Nicholas Harvey is noted as
being brought into the province as a transporte of
FATHER ANDREW WHITE, the
Jesuit.

By 1637 Nicholas Harvey was living near St. Mary's
City and served as a
jury member. In the case of the death of JOHN
BRYANT, "a planter of
Mattapanient, and an adventurer on the Ark",
Nicholas Harvey signed the
statement at the inquest.

In 1/1639 GOVERNOR CALVERT selected NICHOLAS
HARVEY as the Captain of
Twelve men to wage a war against the Mattapanient
Indians(ARCHIVES OF
MARYLAND 111:87). On completing the Indian
expedition Nicholas Harvey made
a return trip to England .

While in England NICHOLAS HARVEY Married 1st
__________ and had a young
daughter FRANCES HARVEY. On 9/1/1641, CECILIUS
CALVERT, the second LORD
BALTIMORE, who was running the Maryland Colony
from England, wrote a letter
to his brother LEONARD CALVERT , Governor of
Maryland , requesting that
NICHOLAS HARVEY be granted manorial rights. The
end of the letter
stated".....provided.....the said NICHOLAS HARVEY
shall and do this year at
his own charges Transport into my Said Province of
Maryland himself his
wife and five other persons otherwise the warrant
to be of no effect."

According to the patent record in 1641 NICHOLAS
HARVEY received 1,000 acres
for transporting himself, wife(not named) and five
other persons, 3 men
servants: Robert Beard, Henry Spink, John Chair,
one boy ROBERT FORD and
his daughter FRANCES HARVEY. NICHOLAS HARVEY's
Land adjoined "St. Richard's
Manor", and he called his Manor " St.
Joseph's(Patents 1: 129 130).

St. Joseph's Manor

NICHOLAS HERVEY(ALSO HARVEY) HAVING " PRAYETH A
GRANT OF A MANNOR" OF 1000
ACRES OF SOUTH SIDE OF PATUXENT RIVER IN 1641 "
FOR TRANSPORTING INTO THE
PROVINCE THIS PRESENT YEAR HIMSELF, HIS WIFE AND
FIVE OTHER PERSONS,"
CECILIUS CALVERT ON 25 JANUARY 1642 DID "WILL THAT
IT BE CREATED... BY THE
NAME OF THE MANNOR OF ST. JOSEPH'S AND HAVE COURT
LEET AND COURT BARON WITH
ALL THINGS THEREUNTO BELONGING BY THE LAW OR
CUSTOME OF ENGLAND."

MARKER ERECTED IN 1982 BY NATIONAL SOCIETY OF
DECENDANTS OF LORDS OF
MARYLAND MANORS AND MARYLAND HISTORICAL SOCIETY

the marker was errected on Town Creek Drive in
Hollywood, Maryland, near
the driveway entrance entrance to Joseph A.
Dillow's Property, a fitting
memorial to Ark and Dove voyager, and a person
interested in settlement of
the new Province of Maryland.

NICHOLAS HARVEY attended the general assemblies
and was on committees with
the important leaders of his day -- " The
Governor, Captain Cornwalleys,
Mr. Brent, Mr. Secretary (Thomas Hatton), Mr.
Surveyor(Robert Clarke). Mr.
Greene(Thomas Greene), and Nicholas Harvey
appointed for a Committee to
consider of Bills..."

In 1642 the Puritans arrived in Maryland from
Virginia. With the Catholics
of the region NICHOLAS HARVEY, his wife and year
old daughter Frances
Harvey fled to Virginia. The first wife of
NICHOLAS HARVEY, the mother of
his daughter, died in Virginia.

On 8/1644 Nicholas Harvey drew up his will
bequeathing his entire estate to
his young three year old daughter FRANCES HARVEY.
In a court case on
1/21/1659 "FRANCES HARVEY, in a court case on
6/21/1659 " Frances Beckwith
gave her age as 18 years or thereabouts"(ARCHIVES
OF MARYLAND XL1:341).

By 1644 they were back in Maryland and Nicholas
Harvey called in Robert
Ellyson to attend to Jane, " the now wife"
(ARCHIVES OF MARYLAND IV:230).
NICHOLAS HARVEY made no provision in his will for
his second wife JANE.

The will of Nicholas Harvey, Patuxent River, was
probated on 6/28/1647 (1:
11). His daughter was sole legatee and the
witnesses to his will were
William Wheatley and Henry Spink.

JANE HARVEY, the second wife of Nicholas Harvey,
married secondly Thomas
Green of Norfork, Virginia(MD Land Record IX:336):

Memorandum that I JANE GREEN the now wife of
THOMAS GREEN Eliz: River, in
the County of Lower Nrfoulke planter, do here
testify freely before the
Magistrate, that I the said Jane was the Lawful
wife and widdow of NICHOLAS
HARVEY of Patuxent in the Province of Maryland
planter late deceased, and
doe freely acknowledged and Confess, that the
bargaine and sele made (by my
now husband Thomas Greene unto Edward Lloyd of
Seaverne in the foresaid
Province of Maryland) my thirds and rights in and
to my late husband
Harvies Plantation...

In 1654 Jane and Thomas Green of Virginia tried to
obtain Jane's third of
the estate of NICHOLAS HARVEY by selling the third
to Edward Lloyd of
Maryland but it was not granted.

Dear Carole,

Now there is much more in her book in reference to
Frances Harvey the
daughter, ...

[AHL: Jerry goes on for many paragraphs about the
Greenes, with no further mention of the HARVEYS]..

There is a lot more discussion in the Combs-L
archives, if anyone is interested in the finer
points of Nicholas' Widow, etc.
