A cursory look at the deed books in the Register's Office of Orange County reveals that many deeds which were registered before 17o81 either survivied or were recopied. Deed Book I which includes many Granville grants, consists of 283 pages and notes that it contains deeds recorded from 1755-1756. These dates are essentially correct, and it appears that the book was recopied. Deed Book 2 notes that it contains deeds recorded from 1769-1783, although they are not in chronological order; it too reporesents deeds that have been recopied. Several deeds are incomplete and some dates are missing, perhaps due to missing text in the original books. Thus, although many such deeds have been recopied, it is obvious that many more are missing, and the total loss may never be known. The loss makes it necessary to examine other documents which contain information that may aid in further research. The 1780 List of Taxables for Orange County is one such document, particularly because all males who were "of age" were listed as taxables whether they had property or not. In the original list, information to be collected varied slightly in the headings from one district to the other, but generally data was listed under the following: name of person being taxed; number of acres of land and remarks; number of slaves (sometimes denoting sex and age groups);number of horses by type (e.g., mares, fillies, stallions, old, 1 yr., 2 yr, etc) and height by no. of hands high; number of heads of cattle and individual cows; cash on hand; taxable amount of each item listed; total amount taxable.
This list due to long length of the tax list, the information originally shown has been condensed to show only the following information in the dormat described:
numbered serially within district
name of person taxed
Total amount taxable in nearest rounded pound sterling
no. of acres & remarks
no. of slaves
no. of horses
no. of cattle
