| Well, we're back to school! Three days into the school year, and it seems like the same old battles
are still to be fought. Why do we, as parents of children with extra needs, have to go through the same uncertainty
every year! Will our children have any supports? Will their teacher(s) support them being in the class? Will they
have any friends from the previous year in the new class? I'm sure ALL parents go through this process, but now it seems that the media is again throwing a wrinkle into the mess, by printing an article in today's newspaper (Vancouver Sun, Thursday, September 4, 1997: "Special-needs program 'losing support'"). THANKS! Journalism at its finest! The story quotes the B.C. Teachers' Federation president, Kit Krieger, as saying that a recent poll conducted by the federation indicates ".... support for integration by the general public at just 60 per cent...". Because of the recent announcements made regarding funding cuts to the Vancouver School Board and the impact we feel it will make on our family, our school and ultimately our community, we have dedicated our home page to the purpose of gathering information on inclusive education and providing a forum for interested parties to network, educate themselves and respond to this current crisis with a more, hopefully, informed opinion. |
