Lesson 16 - HOW TO GUARD YOUR SONS AND DAUGHTERS FROM DESTRUCTIVE TEMPTATIONS

1. Make sure you are overcoming temptation. As a father, you are the spiritual "umbrella" over your children. If you allow failure in your moral life Satan can bring destructive temptations to your children. 2. Consecrate each child to God. By consecrating your children to God, you reaffirm the fact that each child belongs to God. Remember that parents must give an account to God as to how they reared their children. 3. Instill the fear of God in your children. "...By the fear of the Lord men depart from evil." (Proverbs 16:6). The fear of the Lord is the constant awareness that God is watching everything you think, say, and do, "the fear of the Lord is to hate evil..." Proverbs 8:13 "the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom... Proverbs 9:10. 4. Lead your child to personal salvation. Make sure each child personally accepts Jesus Christ. 5. Challenge each child to total dedication. Following salvation, it is important for each child to totally dedicate his or her life to the Lord Jesus Christ and His will. Romans 12:1 6. Train each child to recognize and resist the devil. Explain that temptation comes after we allow ourselves to be drawn away by our own lusts. (See James 1:13-14). Teach your children how to avoid temptation by rejecting close associations with evil people. Warn them that God does not want us to enjoy the pleasures of youthful lusts; He wants us to flee them. Train them how to resist the devil by identifying with Christ's death, burial, and resurrection. 7. Explain God's umbrella of protection. Your children must understand that as long as they are under your authority, they are protected from destructive temptations. However, if they get out from under your authority, they expose themselves to the realm and power of Satan's control. 8. Prepare each child to cry out to God if attacks. You are fighting not just against a person but against spiritual powers of evil. By crying out to God to bind Satan in the life of your attacker, you are bringing God's power against Satan's power. 9. Establish daily accountability questions. What did you get from your Bible reading this morning? What Scripture did you memorize this last week? Did you effectively use Scripture to overcome sin the last time you were tempted? 10. Teach your children how to stand alone. Every child must learn when and how to stand alone against evil. 11. Pray a daily "hedge" around each child. One powerful weapon that every Christian father has is to pray a daily hedge of protection around each child. Job did this, and Satan complained about its effectiveness. First, ask God to bind and rebuke the power of Satan in the life of each one in your family. Second, pray in the name and through the blood of the Lord Jesus Christ. Third, claim the Scripture that relates to the kind of protection that is needed.
