Lesson 22 - How To Teach
Introduction
A. Be early - show up before the students and have everything
in order
B. Be prepared - know your lesson, rehearse possible scenarios,
anticipate questions
C. Be faithful - be there every time, if possible. Let them see
you are committed.
D. Be considerate - if you can’t make it, let leaders know,
get a substitute, and let students know, if possible
I. Teaching aims at 3 goals:
A. To transfer information
B. To enhance understanding
C. To illicit a response
We want them to :
1. Know more about God
2. come into a personal relationship with Him
3. Adjust their lives to be more pleasing to Him
Teaching is more than standing in front of a group of people and telling
them what they need to know. It is getting them involved in the process
of learning. The ideal goal of teaching is to bring people to the very
edge of truth - and giving them the tools, abilities, and inspiration to
discover it for themselves.
II. Plan
A. A pattern for teaching:
1. Content - teach the concept (or truth)
2. Implication - discover its implications for our lives
3. Response - determine and choose a proper response.
Encourage them to do something.
B. Know your material. Study well and know it thoroughly
before you teach. Then you will be confident and flexible.
C. Build your lesson in terms of the response you hope to
achieve. (e.g. The cnetral point of this lesson is ______. At
the end of this lesson, I want to see ____.)
III. Structure of a lesson
A. A four-part structure for results
1. Hook - something to catch attention, set your goal,
and lead into the lesson
2. Book - explain the lesson - This is the lecture part.
The teacher does the talking here. Use charts,
visual aids, illustrations - whatever helps to get
your point across.
3. Look - get them involved. Get them thinking.
Ask some probing questions. Students must see
how the biblical principles apply to their own lives.
4. Took - encourage a response. Get them to pinpoint
areas where they will respond to what they have
learned. People must make decisions based on
new insights. They must put it inot to practice in
order for it to take.
IV. Motivation to learn
A. Students learn more in relationship than in classrooms.
We need to show those we are teaching that we care about
them. "People don’t care how much you know until they
know how much you care."
B. Conditions for learning
People learn best when:
1. The material makes sense to them. It’s not just a
bunch of gathered facts.
2. It is relevant to their lives. Does it mean anything
to them?
3. It is simple enough to follow, but tough enough
to challenge them.
4. They are led to the point of discovering truth -
not just having it dumped on them.
5. They see it work in their lives. If it works, they
will keep it.
