Música Ranchera
(Mexican Country Music - Literally 'Ranch Music')
Most everyone is familiar
with the Mariachi music of Mexico. Ranchera (pronounced rahn-'cheh-rah) music is very similar, except it is
performed by a solo singer who is accompanied by a Mariachi band. (Normally, the
Mariachis all sing together when they perform.) The ranchera singer also usually
wears a charro suit, like the Mariachis wear. Ranchera music is very popular
in Mexico. Some famous ranchera singers that are popular in Mexico are Vicente
Fernández and Alejandro Fernández. When we stopped at an outdoor restaurant in Guadalajara, they had
live entertainment which included dancers, followed by a ranchera singer named
Rigo Rubiales. After he finished singing, he came around to the tables selling
his CDs. So I got to meet him and have my picture taken with him. Afterwards, my
friend told me that Rigo's music had been played on the radio, and that he had
appeared on TV in Mexico. So he is a rising ranchera star there! Below is our
picture together, and a link to one of the songs from Rigo's CD. I have also included the
lyrics of the song, as well as a translation below. Rigo and I have e-mailed each
other since I returned from my trip, and I use his song here with his
permission.

Gracias, Rigo, por tu amistad y tu música. Esta es mi canción favorita de tu CD.
En Tu Pelo | In Your Hair |
En
tu pelo tengo yo el cielo,
En tus brazos el calor del sol. Por tus ojos y tu boca, Por tus brazos y tu pelo, por tus lagrimas y voz, me muero. |
In your hair I have
the sky,
