Thomas Smitherman was probably a minister, because he married his brother
William #74 and Elizabeth Dean, according to "The Brown Family".
Thomas is listed in Moore Co. NC in the 1790 census.
Also, Hugh Smotherman (1796-1875) is listed in the Rutherford Co. TN Cemetery
Book, Vol. III, page 52, as "Son of Thomas."
