Mr. R.S. Smothermon,
P.O. Box 6448,
Santa Fe, New Mexico, U.S.A.

Dear Mr. Smothermon,

Thank you for your letter of the 17th January and cheque for $100.00/£55.14.

        Please find enclosed the following:-

        1) Photocopy of the entry for the trial of Samuel Smytheman & others - Old Bailey Sessions Papers
            - 10th to l2th May 1744.
        2) Transcript of the entry for the indictment of Samuel Smytheman & others - Middlesex Sessions
            Rolls - Indictments - 8th to 10th May 1744.
        3) Transcript of the entry for Samuel Smytheman & others - Middlesex Sessions Rolls - Gaol
            Delivery - 13th April 1744.
        4) Transcript of the entry for Samuel Smytheman & others - Middlesex Sessions Gaol Delivery
            book - September 1736 to December 1745.

Research into the proceedings relating to the trial of Samuel Smytheman have succeeded in locating a very substantial amount of information from both the 'Old Bailey Sessions Papers' at the Guildhall and the 'Middlesex Sessions Rolls' at the London Metropolitan Archives. The latter records could not be photocopied because of their condition so transcripts are provided.

In answer to your queries, 1) St. Mary Whitechapel no longer exists. It was destroyed by bombing in WW2. The site now forms a small park near to the junction of Whitechapel High Street and Aldgate on the edge of the City of London. Whitechapel does have a very unfortunate reputation due in part to the deprivations of the 19th century and the activities of Jack the Ripper but the part which includes the park is now predominantly offices and shops so is perfectly safe to visit though not particularly attractive. 2) The 'Old Bailey' is situated in the street of that name just off Ludgate Hill, some 500 yards down from St. Paul's Cathedral on the right.

The total research and transcription time with regard to the above was 3 hours 15 minutes, for which the fee is £63.00, plus postage of £0.99. Would you be kind enough therefore to forward the £8.85 sum outstanding, at your earliest convenience. If I can be of further assistance in any way, please do not hesitate to let me know.

Yours sincerely,

Stephen T.J. Wright.
