"Bones of the Dead" - Italian Cookies

3-1/2 c. flour
1/3 c. cake/pastry flour (sifted all-purpose may be substituted)
1 lb. powdered sugar
6 drops clove oil
6 drops cinnamon oil
2/3 c. warm water
For dusting: an additional 2 c. powdered sugar

Sift dry ingredients together.  Put oils in warm water.  Slowly add the
warm water until heavy dough forms (not sticky) like pasta dough (do not
add more flour).  Tear off piece about the size of an orange and roll into
a rope on an unfloured surface.  Roll into piece about 1-1/4 inch wide,
then press flat about 1/4 inch high.  Using a small knife make small cuts
on the diagonal one way then the other making a lattice effect on the
flattened rope.  In a 325 degree Fahrenheit oven bake for 50-60 minutes.
Dust with the additional powdered sugar.  Dunk into liquid such as coffee,
tea, etc., before eating.

WARNING:  do not eat these cookies unless they have been softened or dunked
in liquid -- they could break your teeth!!
