Yes, you read it correctly... A Model 28 (3/4 size machine), in a Treadle base (Singer's economy, one drawer model) and with a Hand Crank! All in one... now to the story...
We had been keeping an eye on this machine for some time, but the price was too high for our budget ($350) so we just looked.
Then a Featherweight came into our possession for $75 ... it was DIRTY and after a major cleanup, servicing, what emerged was a Great Quilter's featherweight (but not a collectors). What I neglected to say was that, included with the accessories, was a spare Bobbin Case which I needed for another Featherweight that we had purchased. So my investment in that machine was pretty much my 400 hours of labor for cleanup, etc.
We talked to the owner of the Moder 28, to see if she might be interested in trading for the Featherweight, and she wasn't ... I don't think she knew what a featherweight was.
Time passed and we made a decision to get this NICE VS-2 we had been keeping on the back burner, the one that was painted white, and we had really given up on the Model 28.
Just yesterday, we got a call from the 28 owner, and she was suddenly QUITE interested in a trade. We met her at the Antique Mall, and she couldn't complete the trade fast enough!
It is a 1902 Singer Model 28K,SN R222321. A call to Singer idicated that that serial number was for a Model 28, Mfg in Clydebank on 6 Jan 1902. The machine is a Hand Crank (original) and is mounted in a 1 Drawer Singer Treadle Cabinet. There is nothing to indicate that the machine isn't original to the cabinet.
The bobbin winder is low (as it should be for a Model 28). And, according to Singer, this a 1902 model (I didn't think the 28 was out an about until sometime after 1912 or 1913). The overall condition of the cabinet, and Koffin top were such that we feel the machine has always had a good home, with no "Barn" or Metal Storage shed tales to tell.
Anyway; Yes Singer did build a few (at least 0ne) 3/4 size machines in treadle bases, for we have one! Eat out your heart Capt. Dick! :-)
