Chocolate Oat Chipsters


3/4 cup firmly packed brown sugar
1/2 cup sugar
3/4 cup margarine or butter, softened
2 ounce (2 squares) unsweetened chocolate, melted, cooled
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 eggs
1 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 cups rolled oats
1 cup crisp rice cereal
6 ounce package (1 cup) semi-sweet chocolate chips
1/2 cup chopped nuts, if desired

Heat oven to 350 degrees. Lightly grease cookie sheets. In large bowl, beat brown sugar, granulated sugar, and margarine until light and fluffy. Add chocolate, vanilla, and egg; blend well. Lightly spoon flour into measuring cup; level off. Stir in flour, baking soda, and salt; mix well. Stir in oats, cereal, chocolate chips, and nuts. Drop by rounded teaspoonfuls 2 inches apart onto prepared cookie sheets. Bake at 350 degrees for 9 to 13 minutes or until set. Cool 1 minute; remove from cookie sheets. Makes 4 dozen cookies.
