Brian Wilson - Publications
Here's a list of some of the best Brian Wilson related books and magazines I've come across :
Books
Priore, Domenic, ed. Look ! Listen ! Vibrate ! Smile ! Carlsbad, California : Surfin' Colours Productions, 1989. Absolutely the best reference ever released on the recording of and hoopla behind the never-released Smile album.
White, Timothy. The Nearest Faraway Place. New York, NY : Henry Holt and Company, Inc., 1994. Subtitled : "Brian Wilson, The Beach Boys, and the southern California Experience", that about sums it up.
Wilson, Brian, with Todd Gold. Wouldn't It Be Nice : My Own Story. New York, NY : HarperCollins Publishers, 1991. Finally, Brian's own words. It was written during the Sweet Insanity sessions under Eugene Landy's watchful eye. There is quite a good deal of info on the making of Sweet Insanity here, but since Landy was around, you have to take some of it with a grain of salt.
Magazines
Discoveries. Vol. 2, No. 10 Oct, 1989. Beach Boys, Honeys, and Spring discographies, and an interview with Dave Nowlen of the Survivors.
Reum, Peter. "Collecting Solo Brian Wilson" Goldmine 1 June , 1990.
Tamarkin, Jeff. Interview with Brian Wilson. "Surf's Up" Goldmine 18 Nov. 1988.
Umphred, Neal. "Brian Wilson - Taken For Lost And Gone And Unkown For A Long, Lone Time" Goldmine 18 Nov. 1988.
Umphred, Neal. "Brian Wilson U.S. Discography And Price Guide" Goldmine 18 Nov. 1988. Contains all Brian Wilson solo material and all non-Beach Boys Brian Wilson production, musician, vocal, and songwriting credits until Nov. 1988. A great reference.
Umphred, Neal. "Beach Boys U.S. Discography And Price Guide" Goldmine 1 June , 1990. As of 1990, this was a great source for tracking down all the obscure label changes and B-sides that were available.
