("cat" in Japanese)

  • Neko the Beagle
  • Neko-Peek-o

Neko arrived on our front porch on Christmas Eve, 1994. She took immediate occupancy of the cushioned lawn chair and proceeded to whine and holler. Since we already had three cats in residence, we were extremely reluctant to bring in another and upset the sometimes delicate balance of nature, but she was just a kitten, and it was cold (and, we had to do something to shut her up).

There is something about Neko that the three cats who preceded her (Pauley has since gone to RB) occasionally found extremely annoying and which drove them to attack (we theorize that she defines the concept "natural victim"). Neko found that the best defense was to stay out of their way and out of their line of sight, so she commandeered a perch on top of the floppy disk cabinets, which sit on a shelf above the desk. A pseudo sheepskin rug made it a particularly comfortable home base; this is still a favorite spot.

Neko had been in the house about five months when she suddenly noticed the ceiling fan in the bedroom (which is perpetually on). She stared at it in horror for a full minute, whirled around and bolted for the relative safety of the bedroom doorway where she turned and watched it with ever-increasing fear evident on her face, then fled.

To our surprise, Neko took to Omar (RB) almost immediately when he joined the clowder. (Yes, he was #5! Is "suckers" written somewhere on the outside of our house?) They wrestle and chase each other and are generally best friends. Poor Neko finally found a kitty who liked her very much, after a year of indifference and outright hostility from the three cats who had preceded her.

Neko's interaction with the ferrets (and several more photographs of her) can be found on DaBoyz's and Boo's pages.

Neko seldom contributes to the Usenet newsgroup rec.pets.cats.community but, when she does, it's certain to be some sort of complaint!
