Even Santa needs a little help and so do we.

We're calling on all TLC "elves" to help make this event a success!
The reason why TLC's craft show is so unique, is due to the fact that all the items for the sale are donated by wonderful folks who want to help the shelter. We are seeking donations of craft items and baked goods to make this event a huge success.
If you will be donating items for the sale, please bring the items to the Shelter between November 6th through November 11th or better yet, you can bring the items to the Homer Township Hall on November 12th between the hours of 11:00 A.M. and 1:00 P.M., when we will be setting up. If you prefer to bring your donations the day of the sale please have them at the Homer Township Hall at 9:30 A.M.
Please have items prepriced and bakery labeled.
(so nobody has to guess if it is apple or if it is peach)

Helpful Tip!
To save yourself time during the busy holidays, purchase extra bakery at the sale and freeze it. When friends and relatives drop by you'll have delicious homemade bakery to serve, without going through all the work!

Sometimes it feels like the straw that broke the camel's back.
Caring for the animals at the shelter is the easiest and most enjoyable part of the work we do..... but we cannot say the same holds true when dealing with some of the people who are relinquishing pets, as with the following case.
The cat sat inside the plastic pet taxi as the woman and her teenage daughter, told the staff member at the front desk that they were there to get rid of their cat. When asking them the reason why, they answered, showing no emotion, that they just did not want to be bothered by the cat anymore. As the incoming records were being filled out, numerous questions were asked, to help us in placing the cat in the best home possible.
During this time, they never once bothered to mention the condition the cat was in. The cat looked as if it had been hit by a car, it was bleeding profusely, as it lay moaning, obviously in pain. A staff member immediately whisked the cat away to get medical attention, to save the cat's life.
The mother and daughter were questioned as to how the cat had sustained such severe injuries. Their expressions remained impassive, as they shrugged their shoulders and replied "I don't know." When the paperwork was done, and they were about to leave, we asked them if they would leave a donation for the cat's care. They appeared stunned that we would have the audacity to make such a request, and replied in unison, "what for?" We looked at the two of them in disbelief (did you ever feel like you were talking to a stump? Well this certainly was one of those times.) We explained to them the cat was in dire need of immediate medical care. With a look of disdain on her face, the mother said that is why we brought it here so we didn't have to pay for its care, as she grudgingly wrote out a check for twenty dollars.
The woman's twenty dollar check did not begin to cover cost of the cat's medical care, but fortunately we were able to get the cat the medical care it needed in order to save it's life.
The irony to this entire episode, hit us when we looked at what was imprinted upon the woman's check ..... "Smile God loves you!"

*NOTE: This is another animal that has been saved thanks to the Bertha Fund

Bake Sale
The bake sale that Kat Tempinski of KMT photography held for TLC at the Suburban Bank and Trust located in Orland Park, raised $440.00! We appreciate the bank allowing us to hold the sale there and want to thank all those that baked for the sale including, Gerry Pajkos, Michele Chalifaux, Kathy Przybyla, Hollis Ardizzone, Dawn Heim, Drexa Jo Gross, Sue O Shaughnessy, Donna Holous, Sandi O'Brien, Judy Kunkle, Lee Ann Mayr, Andrea Klee and Annie Coleman. We also want to thank Donna, Drexa Jo, Kathy, Kat and Annie for being there to sell all those goodies.
This has been the first "baked goods only sale" we have held in years, and think that it turned out great! If anyone would be interested in baking for a TLC bake sale or help at a sale, please let us know since we will be holding more bake sales in the future.

Wanda Muntwyler Foundation
We would like to give our sincerest appreciation to the Wanda Muntwyler Foundation for approving a grant in the amount of $4,000.00 for TLC. This will enable the shelter to purchase equipment and publish pamphlets on safety with animals for school children with the remainder of the money to be used for the Bertha Fund.
