We Lost a Good Volunteer and a very Dear Friend, Jim Mikota
Jim Mikota first came to TLC some 30 years ago when the shelter was located in an old building on 159th street. Jim had been looking for a little dog to adopt, at the time, but unbeknownst to us besides adopting a little dog Jim adopted TLC. Jim would stop by to visit from time to time, which eventually led to his volunteering. Even though you may not have known Jim by name, if you stopped down on any given Saturday you would have seen Jim sitting behind the front desk answering the telephone, scheduling appointments, and informing people about the various animals available for adoption, with one of his favorite phrases being "You're not that far away, why don't you come on down and take a look." More often than not Jim was able to talk folks into coming in. Jim was at the shelter like clockwork, he rarely missed a day, he enjoyed dealing with the hustle and bustle of a busy Saturday. Once in a while if it was slow, Jim would leave a little early, and as he walked out the door he would laughingly say "You'll have to dock my pay." which would make us chuckle, because Jim never asked for a cent he gave generously of his time for over 20 years, and he gave generously however he could to help the homeless animals at TLC ..... he became a part of the TLC family...... he became a part of our family.
Jim had a great love for animals. Even though Jim was a Korean War Veteran, when it came to animals he was a softy. If he heard of an animals being abused his eyes would well up with tears. Jim had never married but he dearly loved what he called his "kids" his little Chihuahuas and Rat Terriers, Chico, Pepe, Sandy and Daisy, that he had adopted from the TLC. He enjoyed telling us about their escapades, and how they would curl up and sleep with him.
Saturdays are not the same without Jim, he was more than a good volunteer, he was a good friend to all of us, and he is sorely missed.
Notice to our Supporters
Another group calling itself "TLC" is now operating in our area. Although we applaud all efforts on behalf of the animals, we want our supporters to know that this new group is not affiliated in any way with the Tender Loving Care Aniaml Shelter, and has not pledged any funds raised to us. If you are unsure about a fundraising event, please call the shelter or check our website to see if we are sponsoring it.
Special thanks to Bob Rossi and Ted Musto for Coming to the Aid of a Damsel in Distress
What do you do with a 1989 DOS mailing program? I should have known when I was hearing snickers from folks who had not seen such an antiquated program in the last ten years, that something was not right. Not being a computer geek I was under the assumption that "if it's not broke, don't fix it"........ WRONG!!! Boy was I sadly mistaken. In the last issue of Paw Prints, you might have noted that the shelters old computer was giving me all kinds of major problems and glitches and two drives failed to work, the only solution to the problem was to purchase a new computer. Little did we realize that our old faithful DOS mailing program did not like the new computer with Windows XP. As if protesting this "new fangled program" what had been my trusted mailing program for years, started to self destruct before my very eyes! It would not permit me to do some of the simplest things, that for me were very necessary, like enabling me to print out a bulk mail report, being able to copy the mailing list to a disk, sorting the names alphabetically etc., you get the picture. To sum it all up, I was in a terrible mess, so much so that everyone tiptoed out of the office for fear I might explode.
That is where Bob Rossi came in to the picture. Bob to put it mildly is a computer wizard. As hard as Bob worked to save all the data for me and transfer it into an up to date mailing program, my once trusted mail program would not hear of it, and even a wizard could not force it to perform.
Bob said he had good news that he and his friend Ted Musto who is a mastermind in creating computer programs, would make one up specifically for TLC with all the bells and whistles at no charge! The bad news was that the entire mailing list would have to be retyped. Upon first hearing that my heart sank, adding this task to everything else I had to get done seemed overwhelming, but I struggled through it and now we are up and running. If there are any errors please let me know, I'm only human and typing is not one of my fortes. Again I want to say thanks a million to Bob and Ted for all the hours they put in making a tailor made program for us.
