INFORMATION Chapter One Chapter
one deals with issues surrounding the early origins of our immigrant
ancestor, William Orcutt, and examines
many early historical references to him, early Orcutt history, and some
theories, assumptions, suppositions, and various mistaken information that is
often attributed or associated with William.
Entomology of the Orcutt and related surnames are studied, as found in
recorded history and scholarly works. Chapter Two Chapter
Two begins on page 45, documenting the Orcutt, and our old well established
allied family Edson’s common ancestral ties to the Bickley family of
Warwickshire, England. Pivotal to present Orcutt and Edson family historical
accuracy, and future family history possibilities is the marriage of Samuel
Edson and Susanna Bickley , who has mistakenly long been attributed to having been an Orcutt. The location of the
marriage record of these two persons has caused many people to espouse a more
logical avenue for Orcutt and Edson genealogy and family history to proceed
on. and many good records and other information found in connection with
members of these families are included. Chapter Three Chapter
Three begins on page 67, documenting the still tentative descendants of John
Awcotte of Warwickshire, England, of whose family many Orcutt family
historians believe is that of our own William Orcutt. Orcutt and related surnames are compared
with Awcotte, and various other names that are found used interchangeably in
English Parish records. Various
examples of related surnames include Awcote, Awcotte, Arcote, Arcotte,,
Aucott, Alcot, Allcott, Alcote, Alcocke, Allcote, Howcote, Howcott, Hawcott,
and Orcote. Related, or “allied”
surnames include Allen, Athearn, Bass, Bayley,
Baxter, Belcher, Billings,
Duchford (Duckford), French, Fullerton, Gilbert, Gill, Hayden, Henshaw, Lane,
Marsh, Milner, Needham, Orcutt, Paine, Ruggles, Saunders, Symon,
Wrightman. Locations include
Kingsbury, Baxterley, Mancetter, Over Whitacre, Nuneaton, Aston, and other
locations in Warwickshire, England.
Braintree, Exeter, Chilmark, Tilsbury, Weymouth, Scituate, Marshfield, Bridgewater, Reading, Rehoboth,
Hingham, Dorchester, and Boston, Massachusetts. Chapter Four Chapter
Four begins on page 87, documenting the descendants of John Bickley, and the
establishment of Orcutt and Edson connections to the Bickleys of Warwickshire, England. Several ancient wills are presented as
transcriptions that reveal important familiar relationships. Allied families are Allkut, Bates, Bilson, Brandon, Brown, Byram, Chilton,
Dean, Delaway, Dugdale, Edson,
Evans, Field, Hale, Hayward, Hilton, Howard Hunt, Jones,
Kingman Orcutt, Orton, Packard,

include Kingsbury, Baxterley, Over Whitacre, Nether Whitacre, Fillongley,
Mancetter, Nuneaton, Sutton Coldfield, Coventry, and Birmingham in
Warwickshire, England. Many places in
Massachusetts, and Colonial America. Chapter Five Chapter
Five begins on page 113, and documents early references to William and Mary
Lane Orcutt and their family, including Plymouth County, Massachusetts
probate records. Considers the
possibility, (the first and only found for William after several centuries of
research by many people), of William Orcutt having been the William Hawcott
that was a pin maker from Coventry, England that was bound to the well known
trader John Bridges to work four years in Barbados. This same William’s
service ended in the right time for him to have married Mary Lane in
Hingham. There is also some
examination of William Orcutt’s
likelihood of having been a sailor, or a nail maker, comparing the
merits of two different long held Orcutt family legends. Chapter Six Chapter
Six begins on page 119, and documents facts known about the life of Lt.
Joseph Orcutt, the son of William and Mary Lane Orcutt born ca, 1672. Includes historical references, land
records, and the probate of the Estate of Joseph’s wife, Sarah Smith Orcutt’s
brother’s property in Swansea, Massachusetts. Also included is a short
genealogy report of the paternal ancestors of Sarah Smith back to her
grandfather, James Smith, born ca. 1610 in England. Joseph’s move to
Connecticut, and some various information that is found about him in records
in that place is included. Allied
