WHY
teach a HEARING child
to sign??

Well, I guess since you are here, you have some questions.
When people learn that I have taught the babies sign, the first
thing they ask is: "Are they deaf?" Others have told me "they
will never learn to talk if you teach them sign." Well, this is
just not true. Once they had their tubes put, their hearing
increased, and they began to say the words instead of signing them.

The thing is, we all inadvertently teach our children "sign." We
teach them to wave "hi" and "bye-bye." We teach them songs
with finger plays, such as "Pat-a-cake" and "The Itsy, Bitsy
Spider." They raise their arms to us when they want up and
rub their eyes when they are sleepy.
