Jodie's Christmas Story

This story was written when I was very young and I thought I would share it with you all here.

Once upon a time, there was a little girl named Jodie and both of her parents were poor. They didn't have enough money to buy her even a little Christmas gift. Jodie was five years old and wanted a doll for Christmas. She wrote a note to Santa Claus asking him for the doll and a gift for each of her parents.

Christmas Eve came and Jodie put out milk and cookies for Santa Claus. She ran into her room and jumped onto her bed. Her mother came and tucked her in.

"Mommy," Jodie said, "I told Santa to bring us all a gift!"

"Honey," said Jodie's mom, not wanting to get her feelings up too high and then be dropped. "Don't get too excited. Santa has more kids to worry about. I'm sorry to spoil your fun, but we're so poor!"

"Oh, I'm not worried, Mother. I know he'll come!"

The next morning Jodie's parents were awakened by Jodie's loud shouts of excitement. They walked in to find Jodie playing with a beautiful, blonde doll. Jodie's mom got a new gold watch and her father, a new hat....for he had left his old hat in the chair by Santa's milk and cookies. When they looked at his old hat they saw it was squished as if it had been sat on!!!

Jodie, still to this day, when she tells her grandchildren the story, she puzzles over the squished hat....but what do you think happened??!??!??
