He married Mary WARTERS in Allegany, Cattaraugus, NY, USA, CA 1860.⁽¹⁴⁶⁷⁾ Mary was born in Alsace-Lorraine, France CA 1838.⁽¹⁴⁶⁸⁾ Mary was the daughter of Joseph WARTERS and Marie Theresa. Mary died 20 MAY 1919 in Allegany, Cattaraugus, NY, USA, at 80 years of age.⁽¹⁴⁶⁹⁾ Her body was interred 22 MAY 1919 in Allegany, Cattaraugus, NY, USA, St. Bonaventure Cemetery.⁽¹⁴⁷⁰⁾

He was inducted into Co G, 154th Reg., NYV, of the Union Army in Allegany, Cattaraugus, NY, USA, 22 AUG 1862.⁽¹⁴⁷¹⁾ The regiment was organized at Jamestown, NY, and mustered in September 24, 1862. It left the state for Washington, D.C., September 30, 1862. He saw the following service with the regiment: Joined Corps at Fairfax, Va., October 2, 1862, and duty there till November 1. Movement to Warrenton, thence to Germantown November 1-20. March to Fredericksburg, Va., December 10-15. At Falmouth, Va., till April 27, 1863. "Mud March" January 20-24. Chancellorsville Campaign April 27-May 6. Battle of Chancellorsville May 1-5.

On 2 May 1863 he was wounded and taken prisoner in Chancellorville, VA. Conrad was later paroled, and reported to Camp Parole, MD on 15 May 1863. On 1 Aug 1863 he was present at Chestnut Hill Hospital in Philadelphia, PA. Conrad was transferred to the Veteran Reserve Corps on 6 Sep 1863, and was, on 7 July 1865, honorably discharged in Philadelphia, PA.

The coroner listed the injuries of Joseph as a broken neck, fractures of both legs, a crushed chest, and a fractured skull. His body was interred 14 AUG 1950 in Allegany, Cattaraugus, NY, USA, Allegany Cemetery.⁽¹⁴⁸⁰⁾ He married Mildred.
