THE FAMILY OF ABNER C. SMITH AND SARAH MOTT

of Medina, Portage and Sandusky County, Ohio

Federal census reports indicate that Abner C. Smith, a farmer, was born in Massachusetts circa 1798. The Family History Library has a record of an Abner C. Smith, son of Abner Smith and Olive Onion, born November 2, 1798 in Dedham, Norfolk County, Massachusetts. I am uncertain if this is the same person. The lineage of the Dedham, Massachusetts Abner C. Smith has been traced back to the 1600’s. On October 6, 1820 in Medina County, Ohio, Abner married Sarah Mott, daughter of Ezekiel and Mary Mott. The wedding was performed by Burt Codding, justice of the peace.

By 1826 the Smith family removed from Medina County to Portage County, Deerfield Township, Ohio, the area where a large group of Sarah’s Mott family farmed. Abner is part of a special record done in Portage County, an enumeration of white youth ages 4-12 taken in 1832. The Smith’s were residing in the Deerfield School District #1 and had three children. Abner and his family traveled to western Ohio by 1840 and was farming in Portage Township, Wood County. From there the family removed to Montgomery Township, Wood County and Abner had one hundred dollars of real estate which he owned. Abner is enumerated on the 1860 census as living in Fremont, Sandusky County, Ohio. Four of Abner and Sarah’s sons served during the Civil War and two died from injuries sustained during battles.

Abner C. Smith died on March 22, 1875 in Madison Township, Sandusky County, Ohio. Sarah Mott Smith died before her husband, but to date I have not found her death records or their burial site.

3. Sarah Smith born June 1, 1826 in Portage County, Ohio died February 26, 1894 in Bradner, Ohio married Jacob Plantz (Plants).
4. William Smith born 1830 in Ohio died May 28, 1862 in Louisvile, Kentucky a causality of the Civil War. William, a private, mustered into service at Fremont, Ohio on November 16, 1861, at age twenty eight, with Company F 72nd Infantry OVI.
5. Ezra A. Smith born 1833 in Ohio died June 16, 1862 in St. Louis Missouri a causality of the Civil War. Ezra, a private, mustered into service at Fremont, Ohio on November 6, 1861, at age twenty six, with Company F 72nd Infantry OVI.
6. Ezekiel Smith born 1836 in Ohio.
7. ORISON SMITH born October 10, 1838 in Ohio died March 10, 1918 in Bradner, Ohio married DRUSILLA KNAPP.
8. Augustus H. Smith born 1841 in Ohio. Augustus, a private, mustered into service at Fremont, Ohio on November 20, 1861, at age twenty one, with Company F 72nd Infantry OVI. He survived the Battle of Vicksburg and was honorably discharged on September 11, 1865 following three years of service.
