[From The Gazetteer of Scotland, by Rev. John Wilson, 1882.]

At some point in his young adult years, William went to Glasgow.

William & Mary
were married c1854
in Scotland.

They had 8 children:
(the 6 eldest were all born in Glasgow Lanark Scotland)

1) Mary b 1855,
married Mark PORITT (at least 1 child=Susannah)

2) Anne b 1859

3) *Esther b 1860,
married John THOMASON in Aug 1878 (12 children)

4) James b 1862

5) Elizabeth b 1865
(living with Mary TICHBORNE & Mark PORITT in 1881)

6) Robert Semple b 1866

7) Jane b 1869 in Liverpool Lancashire
8) Kate b 1870 in Breighmet Lancashire

Obviously between 1866 and 1869,
the family had moved to William's home area and had 2 more children.

At the time of Esther's wedding in 1878,
William is listed as a 'boot and shoe maker'.

At the time of the 1881 CENSUS,
William & Mary and some of their children
were living at 3 Waterloo Street in Little Bolton Lancashire.
He was still working as a 'shoemaker'.

It is not know at this time, whether at the time of her wedding,
Esther was living on her own
or boarding at Lane Top in Atherton
or whether her family had lived there for a time.
