Demeter ( Ceres ): The Greek Goddess of Agriculture; mother of Persaphone. While she really has nothing to do with the surname I thought I would be remiss not to include the most famous Demeter of all

Donald Lee Demeter: Born 1935, Pro American Baseball Player, OF-3B-1B 1956, 58-67, Dodgers, Phillies,Tigers, Red Sox, Indians Career Stats: Games: 1109, Avg: .265, HR: 163, RBI: 563 World Series Stats: Games: 6, Avg: .250, HR: 0, RBI: 0 Don Demeter, a slim righthanded, 6'4" slugger who hit more than 20 homeruns each year from 1961 through 1964, and twice hit 3 homers in a single game, with the Dodgers in 1959 and the Phillies in 1961. In Don's best offensive season, playing mostly 3rd base for the 1962 Phillies, he batted .307 with 29 homers and 107 RBI. He set a ML record for outfielders with 266 consecutive errorless games from Sept. 1962 with the Phillies through July 1965 with the Tigers.
