When you were young and your mother cooked porridge, did
she ever forget to put in the salt as she cooked it?
This happened several times in my childhood, and it was
never a pleasant experience to be the one who discovered this loss. Although
only a pinch of salt was missing, it affected all the bowls of porridge.
One of the interesting things about salt is that when
it is used it loses itself. You do not see salt in your food but
you can taste its presence as it flavours all it touches. When used in
various chemical processes, salt also dissipates after fulfilling its purpose,
just as it does after it has dissolved the ice on the roads of Canada and the
U.S.A.
Since earliest times salt has been associated with
value and worthiness. In Roman times salt was exchanged for slaves, hence
the saying 'He isn't worth his salt!' Salt is an important mineral
in our lives if we wish to remain fit and healthy.
Whenever salt is mentioned in the Bible, it is as an important,
cleansing and valuable essential. When Elisha sweetened the waters of Jericho,
he threw salt into them to illustrate its purifying power (2King
2:20-21). Jesus told his followers “you are the salt of the earth”
(Matt 5:13). In the book of Job (chpt 6:6),
written hundreds of years before Christ, we find:
“Can that which is unsavory
be eaten without salt.”
1. Why is salt so important in our lives?
Now read today's scripture:
You are like salt for all mankind. But if salt loses it
saltiness, there is not way to make it salty again. It has become worthless,
so it is thrown out and people trample on it.
You are like light for the whole world. A city built
on a hill cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp and puts it under a bowl;
instead he puts it on the lampstand, where it gives light for everyone
in the house. In the same way your light must shine before people, so that
they will see the good things you do and praise your Father in heaven.
Matt 5:13-16
4. What is God calling us to be every day?

It is easy to look like a Christian. We may go
to Church every Sunday. We may talk about God and how much He means to
us. We may do all this and still be only sand. Christianity, like salt is no good unless it is
used. Christianity,
like salt, preservatives what is good and prevents its decay. Christianity
like salt, leaves evidence of where it has been without being visible.
9. Would you consider using salt only on Sunday?
If you have things that need putting right with God, take
time now and talk with Him about them.
Lord help us to be as salt today. Let our lives influence
those that we come in contact with, just as salt seasons all it touches.
Help us deal with areas you have brought to mind. Give us grace in speech
and thought and deed, so that these all give glory to you. Let us truly
be "salt of the earth" every day. We ask this in Jesus name, Amen.

Colossians 4:6
Let your speech
always be with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may
know how you ought to answer
each one. (NKJV)
