Children, Heaven & Jesus

I am so intrigued and enamored with young children's approach to life. Here are a couple of instances that recently happened that really touched my heart:

We were on a short road trip on Sunday. We had to stop to get petrol. While we were at the filling station, there was another car just on the other side of the pump from us.

There were two young children in the back seat. One was a toddler and the other was his three or four year old sister. They were eating some stick candy and kind of enduring the side trip.

The older sister noticed that we had children in our car so she began to make regular eye contact and sort of hop around inside the car--up to the front seat and then to the back. In a wordless language, she was acquainting us with herself. She showed us her candy and several little stunts that she could perform right there in the car.

She giggled and grinned and used her sticky fingers to push her hair behind her ears. Her little brother just peeked around his car seat and gave us little grins and looks.

The children's mother must have told them it was about time to go as she handed them another small piece of candy. The little girl popped her candy in her mouth and bounded into her seat and buckled herself in--all the while maintaining eye contact so that we would be sure to be watching her.

We were also leaving the filling station. The little girl with the candy watched us, as did her little brother. As our car pulled away, she waved energetically. Again wordlessly, she said good bye to her new friends. Hey eyes and motions seemed to speak volumes.

I got a tear in my eye as I thought of some of things her eyes might be saying. She seemed to genuinely miss us already. Yet she seemed confident she might see us again. More likely, in her childlike way, she realized it had been a fun moment... and that was all that mattered...

We had some baby birds in a nest on our porch. They flew away yesterday. My younger daughter saw one of them in a bush as she was going to the mailbox. She was excited because she thought he was stuck. I went to see if there was a problem.

We watch the fledgling hop around inside of the bush. After watching him a bit, I told my daughter that the little bird was just frightened and looking for his mom. As we were walking away, she called back to him, "Just keep calling, little bird. She will come!"

People were bringing little children to Jesus to have Him touch them, but the disciples rebuked them.

When Jesus saw this, He was indignant. He said to them, "Let the little children come to Me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. I tell you the truth, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it."

And He took the children in His arms, put His hands on them and blessed them.
Mark 10:13-16

Sons are a heritage from the LORD, children a reward from Him. Like arrows in the hands of a warrior are sons born in one's youth. Blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them. They will not be put to shame when they contend with their enemies in the gate.
Psalm 127:3-5
