Water

Water is one of those things we really take for granted. They say however, that it is more essential to life than any other thing. You can go without food longer than you can go without water. Your body is about 90% water.

Jesus thought water was very important. Remember the story of the woman at the well? The story has many huge lessons. I am just mentioning it and I won't cover them in this writing. Go and read over it for yourself and be refreshed. The thing that struck me in that story was the "living water."

Living water is like normal drinking water but having supernatural properties--a supernatural thirst quencher. I think all of the properties that apply to water also apply to living water, but it is a most difficult thing to communicate.

So I suggest that you conduct a study of water. Not necessarily an open-book intense study, but an on-going intense study. Maybe even ask the Lord to show you about water in your daily life.

One thing that strikes me is how only water refreshes like water. I have been mildly addicted to carbonated sodas. I thought that these were the ultimate in refreshment. But I have stopped drinking sweet, syrupy carbonated drinks. I had one the other day and it did not even taste good (this is a victory in my life, by the way!). Give me a large cold glass of water anytime!

Oh, I am not a legalist about soda or caffeine. All things are lawful for me but not profitable! In this one lesson alone, I have 1-saved money, 2-saved my teeth and body from the sugar, and 3-been reminded of fundamental truths about water.

Did you ever play with the water hose? Go with me to your childhood and enjoy this other little story of the truth about water:

Summer is here. It is those sweltering hot days in the south we call "dog days." There are no people or animals staying outside for very long--except the cicadas.

It hasn't rained in days. The plants are beginning to feel the effects of very dry soil. My daughter and I use the watering cans and hose to try and keep tender plants moist. It seems like you have to water forever to equal what would be a light rain shower.

My girl has gotten muddy again. I don't care. It's summer and she is a kid. Wouldn't I be a great mom if I let her play in the spray?

"Hey! We're all finished. Come over here close to me!" I call to my devoted assistant. As she gets close I gun her once with the spray of ice cold well water. She grins impishly as she realizes what is about to happen.

And it was as though the Lord whispered in my ear, "Watch her." His Spirit reminded me of all of the attributes of water...then living water.

It seemed like the next events were happening in slow motion. She was taking the part of the believer that He had called to the living water. She lost her breath as she darted through the stream of ice-cold well water. She gasped and then burst into hysterical laughter, again and again. Her joy filled the air and it was as if she could not imagine anything that she would rather be doing. She could not resist stopping to drink the cold rejuvenating water.

I felt so fortunate to have this moment--to be reminded how exhilarating it is to drink from the well that won't run dry. Thank you Daddy for the picture of truth.

On the last and greatest day of the Feast,
Jesus stood and said in a loud voice,
"If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink.
Whoever believes in Me, as the Scripture has said,
streams of living water will flow from within him."
By this He meant the Spirit,
whom those who believed in Him were later to receive.
