Promise Keepers
A non-denominational Christian organization made up of exclusively men, was founded by former University of Colorado football coach, Bill McCartney, in 1990. Those involved in Promise Keepers are taught `seven promises` to keep.
The seven promises are as follows:
1.A Promise Keeper is committed to honoring Jesus Christ through worship, prayer, and obedience to His Word, in the power of the Holy Spirit.
2.A Promise Keeper is committed to pursuing vital relationships with a few other men, understanding that he needs brothers to help him keep his promises.
3.A Promise Keeper is committed to practicing spiritual, moral, ethical, and sexual purity.
4.A Promise Keeper is committed to building strong marriages and families through love, protection, and biblical values.
5.A Promise Keeper is committed to supporting the mission of the church by honoring and praying for his pastor and by actively giving his time and resources.
6.A Promise Keeper is committed to reaching beyond any racial and denominational barriers to demonstrate the power of biblical unity.
7.A Promise Keeper is committed to influencing his world, being obedient to the Great Commandment (Mark 12:30-31) and the Great Commission (Matthew 28:19-20).
Promise Keepers teaches and encourages men to follow through on promises already made, not to just make promises.
Some controversy has been caused in the recent past people saying that promise keepers teach men to be dominant over women and wants women to be submissive, I feel that people are taking the word submissive to mean for the women to be weak and feel that it is telling women to just let her husband be lord and master over her feeling it opens the door for abusive situations etc. I feel this is just a misunderstanding in the whole aspect. You need to have all the information and live the whole aspect of it for it to work. If you are evenly yoked as the Lord says we should be and both of you regard the Bible as truth, then you take the whole verse not just part of it, anyone can take any sentence and make it read the way you want if you turn it enough directions. God instructs the man to Love his wife, Tom never makes a decision regarding our lives without consulting me first, but someone has to have the final say, if there is a controversy where there is a grid lock a decision could take forever to resolve and this is not always possible. When the man takes on the responsibility of having the last say he is also taking on a lot more on his shoulders, he is taking the fall if the decision falters and the wrong move was made, in this way he can protect his wife and family even animals realize this method of survival. Hook to horses to a cart can they both be the leader each going in their own direction and still be a team, I think not. I gladly submit to my husband When I married him I wanted someone strong enough to be the head of the family to care for us love us and protect us he cant do that if I fight him every inch of the way and if He cant do that why the heck have a family we can all just be individuals doing our own thing, that would not be for me however as I enjoy being part of a team having a family for support and love and I thank God every day for my Promise Keeper Husband!
What Promise Keepers is not!
Promise Keepers is not a bunch of stadium events, but a year-round outreach to men through their local church. Promise Keepers is not a membership or dues-paying organization, but is part of a larger movement of Christian men becoming more active throughout their local churches. Promise Keepers is not a political or partisan organization, nor is it affiliated with any denomination. Promise Keepers does not promote a self-help or self-improvement philosophy, but encourages men to commit every aspect of their lives to Jesus Christ.
