Notes for EUNICE GRISTE:

From Isabella McMasters - "I do not have a marriage or death date for Eunice Griste, unfortunately, but since Emma, the daughter of Eunice and Wyllys was born in 1798 and

the 1800 Census  with Wyllys as head of household shows 2 males under 10 and 2 females under 10(one of which would be Emma), I'm approximating

their marriage date as 1790 to 1798.  Wyllys and family also appear in the 1810 Census for Luzerne County with a total of 9 children.

Sometime between 1810 and 1820, the family moves to Dansville, Steuben Co., NY. There is mention of Wyllys and his brother, William, on page 120 in the

book, "Landmarks of Steuben County" by D. Mason.

Circa 1820, Emma Hyde married Pliny Bridge, son of Jesse and Keziah (Cutting) Bridge in Steuben County.  They were the parents of 10

children, one of which was Locina, my husband's ancestor.  Pliny Bridge died on 03 February 1837.  Emma (Hyde) Bridge died on 21 October 1888.

They are both buried in Rogersville Cemetery, Steuben Co.  Information concerning Emma, Pliny, and their children is found on page 494-495 in

the book, "Genealogy of the John Bridge Family in America 1632-1924, Revised Edition", by Rev. William Dawson Bridge.

Notes for THOMAS LATHROP GRISTE:

According to records in the NARA, Thomas L. Grist served as a Private in Montgomery's Regiment, Pennsylvania Militia, War of 1812.  The Company Muster Roll for the War of 1812 shows the following: He served from Nov. 3 to Nov. 24, 1814 in a roll dated in Danville, Penn, Nov. 24, 1814. He was discharged in Danville, Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania.  His place of residence shows as Luzerne County, Pennsylvania.  Danville is now in Montour County, Pennsylvania, about 45 miles south of Thomas Grist's home in Mehoopany, Luzerne (now Wyoming) County, Pennsylvania.  He was paid at a rate of $8/month, received $5.86 for time served and $1.12 for travel pay, for a grand total of $6.98 for his service to his counry.

Notes for MARY "POLLY" OSBORN:

"Also in the IL census it puts her as being born in New Jersey(not PA or CT). This fits with my records. James and Asenath Osborn lived in Orange Co. NY near the Kakiat(New Hempstead). Their son James left a diary/memoirs that several of his descendants in IL have copies of. He states he was born in Orange Co. July 1774. He and his family moved to NJ when he was 10 years old. They moved to Wyoming/Luzerne Co. PA when he was around 20. If Polly was born in 1788 then she would have been born in NJ. The family names came from a biography written for William or William Holden Osborn of Luzerne Co. (I have the source, but will have to look it up if anyone is interested.) James had 4 brothers. John, William, Peter & Henry. He had 3 sisters. Betsey m Mr. Ross, Polly m Mr. Grist and Hannah m John Love."

GEORGE GRIST, retired farmer, P.O. Sunbury; is a son of John B. Grist and Abigail Pray Grist ; his father was born Jan. 9, 1780, in New Haven, Conneticut, and moved to Pennsylvania when 4, and to Ohio in 1807, where he died in 1841; was in the battle against Tecumseh.  His mother was a daughter of Hezekiah Pray; she was born in Pennsylvania about 1790.  They had twelve children.  Mr. Grist was born in 1814, in Berkshire Township, where he has spent almost his allotted three score and ten, and still bids fair for a few more years of usefulness; his younger days were spent in clearing away the forest and attending school, eight months of which he was at Worthingtron, Ohio; he became interested in book keeping, and has always kept a book account  of his farming, which has mostly been his vocation during life; he has been robust and hearty since he was 7 years old.  At the age of 22, he began farming for himself, renting from his father and Atherton.  In April, 1839, he was married to Mary A. Carpenter, daughter of Squire Carpenter; she was born in Licking Co.  In the spring of 1840, he moved on M. Perfect's farm in Trenton Township, and lived there about three years; he then cleared ten acres of a thirty-acre tract, which his father had given him; this thirty acres he traded for forty-three acres in Trenton Twp, in the meantime buying 100 acres of the Spinning tract, and traded it for 120 acres in Steuben Co, Ind, which he then traded for some load in Trenton Twp, adjoinging his forty-three acres; he soon after began trading in stock.

From the article entitled "North Branch Township," written by Marilyn Stark and Otto Keil in the book, "A Look Back: Sesquicentennial, 1842-1992" (history of Wyoming County, Pennsylvania):  "The first mail route extended from Dushore to Scottsville and was established about 1850.  The mail was then received once a week.  John Pfoutz was the first postmaster, and was followed successively by CHESTER GRIST...  (postmaster in the North Branch Township Post Office, Wyoming County)

In an affidavit of the pension application of Amanda (Bowman) Grist for a mother's pension on account of her son, Clayton's death, the following is stated by her husband (and his father ), Chester Grist: That he, Chester Grist, is husband of Claimant and the father of Clayton Grist, above named.  That the deponent has been affected with Asthma or shortness of breath ever since he was a small boy and that on account thereof, he has been unable to do a man's labor most of the time since he arrived at the age of maturity, nor has he been able to earn the wages of an able bodied man in the sense or any other kind of usiness.  That his son, Clayton, enlisted in the service without deponent's knowledge or consent and that at the time he enlisted, deponent had a large family of Girls and helpless children which required his support and the deponent depended on the services of his son before he enlisted...worked out and his wages went to the support of deponent's family.  After he left and entered the service, deponent was deprived of his son's help and eventually had to sell a small farm of twenty-nine acres, which he held under contract, not being able to make the payment thereon so they became due.  If his son had lived, he would have been able, through his assistance, to make the payments on said contract and saved his home.  And deponent further says that the  claimant's health is very poor and always has been very poor. That she has not been able to do her house work or any oher work to earn anything for a number of years. His post office address is Woodhull, Steuben County, New York.  Signed, Chester Grist (his signature)      Cemetery photos:  http://www.clarks.150m.com/cemetery_grist_photos.html  - from : Tom Currier < tcurrier4@gmail.com >

Notes for GEORGE MARTIN GRIST:  George was a surveyor on a new railroad project in California. His family lived in a box car at the site.

60th Wedding Anniversary poem, by Blanche (Grist) Summers :

In 1880 on October to be true, a couple was married in Tippacanoe. Constance Farrell was her name and so shy to be kissed,

And the man so ambitious his name was George Grist. To the west they did try a fortune to make, Each place they took over they had to forsake.

In California, Colorado, and Kansas all three, They lived and existed on a very small fee. But Missouri was best their home to attain,

They had three extra to feed now, whom they brought back by train; Walter, George, and Mayme, two lads and a lass,

Were born in the West as time had gone past. After coming back home and settling down,

Blanche and Ruth came along while they still lived in town. Now with this big a family George said farming was best,

So they bought them a farm where they lived as a test. To find work and make a living was all that they asked,

But with this big a family it sure was a task. On this farm there appeared a curly head lad, The last of the Grist's and a dinger by gad.

When they all got around that table to eat, The food vanished so quickly as well as the meat. Soon George, he and Constance, to town they moved back,

These youngsters to educate, that too was a fact. George could only be satisfied when he's moving around,

But Constance put her foot down, this time on the ground. She said now "a rolling stone gathers no moss"

Which grieved George so much, for it showed who was "boss." Here they lived, raised their children, 'til they all found their homes,

They again settled down, no longer to roam. And this day in 1940, sixty years have just gone by, They are celebrating, royal only one has broken the tie.

They are all home talking, eating in a grand old way, With their children, grandchildren, and great grand ones too, today.

We hope that we can put them ten more years upon our list, For there's no home quite like the home of George and Connie Grist.

Grist, one of John's ancestors, from the history of the Griste family in America written February 6, 1901. "The woods are lovely, dark and deep, but I have promises to keep, and miles to go before I sleep, and miles to go before I sleep."
