Former City Employee Dies

This obituary appeared in the Idaho Falls Post-Register on May 14, 1964.

Gilbert N. Shurtliff, 69, 302 1/2 2nd st., former city employee for 18 1/2 years, died Thursday from a heart attack. He retired four years ago because of health.

He was born July 27, 1894, Cambridge, Idaho, son of Selah and Harriet Emily Howell Shurtliff.

He moved to Ammon with his parents when he was ten years old and later they moved to Milo where they operated a farm.

He was married to Lucy Nixon Henrie, Dec. 28,1828, at Logan. They moved to Iona where he farmed.

They moved to Idaho Falls in 1932 where he worked as a carpenter. In 1942 he became employed by the city of Idaho Falls in the street department.

He was a priest in the LDS church and a member of the 5th ward.

Survivors besides his wife are a daughter, Mrs. Stanley (Wanda) Briggs, 320 2nd st.; and a son, Glen Henrie Shurtliff, Forrest Grove, Ore. Seven grandchildren and one great grandchild survives.

Sisters and brothers are Tom Shurtliff, Iona; Mrs. Lavina Smith, Ammon; Mrs. Lydia Jones, Lincoln; Ezra Shurtliff, May; and Mrs. Hattie Brockway, Long Beach, Calif.

Funeral services will be announced by Wood Funeral Home.

Pallbearers will be Rex Shurtliff, Leland Smith, George Smith, Donald Ball, and Ray Nixon.
