Richard W. Slemmons Letter

This is a letter from Richard Washington Slemmons brother to my great grandmother Emily C. Slemmons Munday.  Richard was a school teacher in Marrowbone, Cumberland Co., Ky.  I have typed it just as I have it.  All the spelling and punctuation are original.

Miss Emily Slemmons:
                    My dear little Sis:
This beautiful Saturday morning, I have concluded to spend a short time in answering your very interesting letter which I received before Christmas.  But, as it has been so long since I received your letter, This can hardly be considered an answer to it.  I have no news of importance to write; therefore, I am at a great loss to know what to say, to interest you.  My health is very good.  I completed my journey in safety the day I left home, but was overtaken by the rain in the evening, when in six miles of Mr. Cloyd's; consequently I had quite an unpleasant time to perform The latter part of the journey.  I am getting along very well with my school.  Most of the students have done exceedingly well since Christmas.  However, There were two that did not work well after intermission.  I set them right with the switch, and they have been doing well ever since.  My classes will commence reviewing Monday for the examination, which will be in four weeks.  I haven't attempted to make another school yet, but have talked to several in the district about it, and they all seem to think it can be made, provided we can get four or five boarders.
You must tell me in your next letter whether you are coming to go to school or not.   Steamboats are running the river regularly now; if you were here you could see one most any time.  I saw Uncle Davy William last Sunday; he said that Aunt Pollie was very poorly(?).
Well, as I have nothing more to write now.  I must close for the present, expecting to receive a letter from you soon.
I remain as ever
        Your affectionate brother
                RWS
