Thomas W. Slemmons Letter

Thomas Washington Slemmons' letter from Glasgow, Ky. to his brother near Taneytown, Maryland

I have transcribed this letter with as much accuracy as possible.  I left the spelling the way he had it.

Barren River, May 22, 1812

Ever Dear Brother,

I am once more going to write to you which I will commit to the mail.  I am in good health which I generally have had.

I have also the pleasure of informing you that I was married on the 7th inst. to Miss Elisa Grandieur of this county.  Oh, twas then I wished to see my relations of which I had not one in the state.  Our guest consisted of 134.  I shall omit speaking much of her beauty or perfections, suffice it to say she is esteemed to be handsome and virtuous.  Her parents and connection respected her fortune tolerable good and above all possessed of an amiable disposition accompanied with industry.  I must next inform you of the impending cloud of war which ???? every patriotic mind the Indians are killing heavily? in the Elenois (I think this is supposed to be Illinois) Territory  Men are flocking from this place as volunteers.  I do not intend going at present as my situtation will not admit it.

So if you received my last letter to you, you observe my situation  I shall be glad to see you as soon as you can make it convenient to come to come inform me by letter immediately of what I requested to know also particulars respecting ??? family   I have here sent a lock of Betseys hair to sister Beckey requesting her to keep it for ??? sakes her eyes are the same colour.

Remember me to my ever dear Father & Mother Sisters & Brothers request them to write to me I would have wrote but time at present well not admit.  Tell brother John I have wrote to him request him to write to me.  That every happiness may attend you is the sincere wish of your affecionate brother.
