The
bison (or buffalo) is a large animal which lives and travels
in herds.
Many
years ago, before there were cities across North America,
bison used to roam in huge herds, traveling 400 miles, up
and down the country in their migration.
The
Indians used the bison for food and their skins for making
teepees and robes.
When
the pioneers moved west, they killed millions of the bison
for food. Some people killed hundreds of bison just for the
sport.
A
hundred years ago, there were only about one thousand bison
left in North America. Now there are about 120,000 living on
private ranches and government preservation
areas.
