Koalas
look like cuddly teddy bears, but they aren't bears. They live in Australia and are a kind
of animal called marsupials. Marsupials carry their babies in a special pocket on their
bellies. The babies crawl into the pocket after they are born and continue to grow and
feed there until they are able to take care of themselves, about six months. Even then the
young koalas ride on the mother's back and stay near her.
Koalas live in trees called eucalyptus. They
eat the leaves of the eucalyptus tree, which are poisonous to other animals. The leaves
give them almost all the food and water they need to live.
Koalas seem very lazy. They do not travel around much. The males eat
during the day and sleep at night, while the females sleep during the day and feed at
night.
