Spanky Listens

One bright, sunny summer day, Spanky and his human friend were sitting on the back porch swing.

Spanky loved to listen to the outdoor noises.

He could hear birds singing and chirping.

Far away he could hear a dog barking.

Sometimes he could hear a car go by.

He heard the wind blow through the trees and bushes.

Then, he heard a new noise. It sounded like something scratching. He listened very hard to find out where the noise came from.

He looked up and the noise got louder. Something was scratching up above.

What was it?

His human friend had heard the noise, too, and got up to see what the noise was. He looked up and listened, then got a broom and banged on the rain gutter.

He thought maybe a bird was making a nest in the gutter.

The scratching kept on.

Finally, he climbed a ladder to look in the gutter. Guess what he found?

He found a little, tiny, baby turtle!

No one could figure out how the tiny turtle got on the roof of the house.

Turtles can't climb trees.
