One day, Sassy saw that
Spanky kept his left eye closed all the time. So, off they went to the eye doctor. This
was a special eye doctor, just for animals.
The doctor looked at
Spanky's eyes very carefully. He used different tools to help him see into Spanky's eye.
Then the doctor said that
Spanky's eye was very sick. 
His eye was infected. The doctor
would have to operate.
Spanky had to stay at the
hospital.
When Sassy came back to
get Spanky after his operation, Spanky looked funny. He had a large plastic cone around
his head. It made him look a little like a spaceman. The cone was there to help protect
his eye.
The cone helped his eye, but got in the way when
Spanky tried to move around.
Now, when Spanky walked,
he wobbled from side to side, because he had to turn his head to see.
Spanky had trouble eating
his food from his dog bowl so Sassy put his food on the floor.
When Spanky tried to jump
up on a chair 
the cone got caught and Spanky fell down. He soon
learned to lift his head high to jump up.
Spanky had to have a lot
of medicine. There were pills to take.
And there were drops and creams
to put in his eye.
Sassy took very good care
of Spanky and when he went back to the doctor for a checkup, he was much better.
