Spanky's Vacation, Part One
Spanky's friends were very busy. He followed them as they
walked back and forth, carrying things, going in and out of the house.

He could tell that something was going to happen and he
didn't want to be left out. So, everywhere his friends went, he went, too.
Then, one of his friends asked him if he would like to go
for a ride.
RIDE? That was one of his favorite words.
Spanky got very excited and began jumping up and down, running around and around.

Soon, everyone got in the van
and
started off. Sometimes rides were very short, just to the newspaper box and back. But,
sometimes rides were very long. Today they rode and rode and rode.
Spanky got very tired and sleepy so he found a cozy spot
to sleep. After a long nap, the van stopped and his friends took him for a walk. Then,
they got back in the van and rode some more. Spanky went to sleep again.
Finally, after several stops and walks, his friends got
out, but left Spanky in the van. It was dark outside. Spanky could not see his friends. He
ran from this window to that window, trying to see them. They carried things out of the
van and moved back and forth in the darkness, using flashlights to see.
Finally, they let him out. He ran around, pulling his
friend with the leash, smelling this and that. Everything smelled different. He wanted to
smell everything. But his friends were tired. They told him it was time to go inside. They
showed him his food and water, but Spanky was too excited to eat.
This was a very strange house.
There was
no big door to open and shut. No steps to climb up. No windows to look out. It was all one
room made out of cloth.
His friends got down on the floor, wrapped themselves in
blankets and acted like they were going to sleep. But they were not in a real bed. Spanky
always had to jump up to get on the bed. This bed was on the floor.
His friends called him and said it was time to go to
sleep. So, Spanky curled up near his friends on the blankets.
Spanky couldn't sleep. He had slept most of the day and he
was very hungry. He didn't like to eat in the van, so he had not eaten all day. Spanky
knew he would have time to eat, now that his friends were asleep.
So, Spanky found his food. After he ate a lot of food and
drank a lot of water, he got on the blankets, turned around and around looking for just
the right spot, and finally settled down to sleep.
to be continued.
