Bible Study #4, What Faith Is

What Faith Is

About this study:
Faith is one of the elementary foundations of Christianity. Before we can experience growth in our walk with God, we must learn to exercise Biblical faith. As it is written, "The just shall live by faith." Romans 1:17 and Habakkuk 2:4.

Key Verse: Hebrews 11:1 "Now Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen."

      a. being sure of what we hope for.

      b. being certain of what we cannot see (see II Corinthians 5:7)

   2. When we have peace concerning an issue about which we have been praying, then we know that we are truly believing and trusting God.

II   Why Is Faith Important?

A. Ephesians 2:8 "For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God,.."

Without faith we cannot be saved.

B. Hebrews 11:6 "But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who dilligently seek Him."

What is impossible to do without faith?__________

   1. Works we do apart from faith does not please God.

   2. Dead works are works we do without faith when we trust in our own ability.

   3. Ephesians 2:9 "..not of works, lest anyone should boast." Once we exercise faith to become God's children, the works we do are pleasing to God. (see James 2:18)

III   Where Does Faith Come From?

A. (John 3:27) - John answered and said "A man can receive nothing unless it has been given to him from heaven."

   1. God is the source of our faith.

   2. John 1:12 "But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name:.."

   3. It is only through God that we can have and exercise faith.

B.Romans 10:17 "So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God"

   1. I Corinthians 2:13, 14

   2. Ephesians 6:17

   3. God makes it possible for us to receive faith from His word.

C. Galatians 5:22 "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control."

When the Holy Spirit is directing us, growing in faith is a result.

IV   Why Do We Have Faith?

A. Ephesians 2:10 "For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them."

    1. To do the will of God.

    2. Obedience and faith go hand in hand.

      a. Hebrews 3:18-19 "And to whom did He swear that they would not enter His rest, but to those who did not obey?"

So we see that they could not enter in because of unbelief.

God requires faith that manifests itself in obedience!

      b. Unbelief is the source of disobedience.

      c. Not doing the will of God is a result of not really having faith.

B. Romans 12:3,6 "For I say, through the grace given to me, to everyone who is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think soberly, as God has dealt to each one a measure of faith. Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, let us prophesy in proportion to our faith;

    1. Faith enables us to use our spiritual gifts.

    2. We will be as effective as our level of faith allows us to be.

C. Galatians 5:6 "...but faith working through love."

Faith enables us to think of others first. Faith is expressed through love.

VI   Faith That Works!

Martin Luther said, "We are not saved by faith plus works, but by faith that works!" The principle of how faith works is described in Hebrews 11:13, "These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off were assured of them, embraced them and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth."

Four principles of how faith works:

A. See the promise - we see the promise in the Word.

B. Be assured of the promise - the Holy Spirit makes the promise alive to us.

C. Embrace the promise - faith comes alive; we truly believe the promise is for us.

D. Confess the promise - faith speaks: we talk like people who believe the promise is for us today.

    1. Put away complaining and negative attitudes

    2. Begin to expect God's best in any and every situation.

    3. Become an encourager of others.
