Major Alfred H. Woltz, Director, Apprentice Training Department, Naval Technical Training Center, Treasure Island, San Francisco, CA, has been nominated to represent the command as the Federal Employee of the Year,1990, in the "Service to the Community" category. Major Woltz has been a pillar in the community while serving in the Cub Scout organization for the Naval Station, the Youth Sports Program, the local marina, and Technical Training Center. While serving as the Cub Master for the island's Cub Scout Pack, Major Woltz actively and purposely recruited young boys to join the local scout organization to ensure that they had productive and high quality activities. During his tenure as Cub Master, his pack has increased in size by over 150%. He has also been active at the BSA District level by serving as a commissioner and district trainer for other adult leaders. Major Woltz has also served on the board of govenors for the Youth Sports Affiliation for Naval Station Treasure Island. As such he coordinated the umpire rotation for the island's Little League program as well as coaching a team. He was also singularly responsible for establishing and building a youth soccer program for the community. From it meager start of four teams, his program now serves over 150 boys and girls with 10 teams. Volunteering his time, talents, and financial resources, Major Woltz also teaches small boat sailing and marine safety to the youth of our community. Were it not for his efforts, many of the youngsters on this isolated island would have little else to do except look for their own fun, and consequently find themselves in harm's way.
