MILITARY DATA: Enlistment - (1) 25 December, 1861, [as James K.] at Henderson; mustered in at Camp Calhoun in 1st Reg. Ky. Light Artillery. He was enlisted by Capt. Alexander into Co. D/ Capt John Hewetts' Batt.

Captured - at Murfeesboro, TN, 15 July, 1862; paroled at McMinnville, TN [no date]; reported at Camp Chase 27 July, 1862; admitted to the post hospital there on 27 September, 1862, and then dischared from the service on 5 December, 1862, for disability.

Muster Roll - July and August, 1862, absent, paroled at Camp Chase. Also absent Sept.-Dec., 1862, - same report until April 30, 1865, when his name was dropped and it was stated he had died 16 Dec., 1862. Later this report was declared erroneous and the charge of AWOL was removed from his record. Record then read, discharged 4 Dec., 1862, from Camp Chase, cause Valvular heart disease - "paroled, furloughed for 20 days, returned."

Enlistment: (2) 30 December, 1862, in Co. H, 39th KY Reg.; age 21; mustered in 15 January, 1863, as 1st Sgt; promoted to 2nd Lt., 13 January, 1864. He "was discharged but could not remain at home because of the enemy. So he reenlisted in the 39th."

Bowling - Died 4 Mar 1891 at Coal Run, KY.; Eliza Mead (widow of C.R. Gardner who died 1909) married 8 July, 1911, at Pikeville, KY., by R.B. Neel. Children: "7 children all over 21" as of March, 1915; Children mentioned as of 1898 were Betsey Stump, B: 13 July, 1886; Rebecca Stump, B: 4 June, 1888; Son O. A. Stump mentioned as caring for James as of July, 1920, along with wife "Mayme". Death: 4 June, 1922 at Pikeville, KY. Health: Heart disease, rheumatism and general disability. Residences: Pikeville, KY, as of 1920; Los Angeles County, CA, as of 10 March, 1906, living at the National Military Home (Old Soldiers' Home); Verndale, Lewis County, Washington as of 1899; Pike County as of 13 November, 1874.
