BARNEGAT LIGHTHOUSE - LONG BEACH ISLAND, NJ

On Thursday August 20, 1998 we visited Barnegat Lighthouse which is located at the northern tip of Long Beach Island. My mommy and I climbed 217 stairs to the top. It was a nice sunny day.

The current Barnegat Lighthouse structure was built in 1858. The red and white tower is 165 feet tall, with the light elevation rising to 175 feet above sea level. There are 217 steps to the top. The light was first lit on January 1, 1859 and was manually operated until it was made an automatic light in 1927 when the land around it was donated to the State of New Jersey. It was completely retired on January 1, 1944. When operational the light could be seen from as far as 30 miles out to sea.
