Moses Overton was born in 1809 in Anderson County, Tennessee. He married Nancy Jane Foster in about 1830 in Anderson County. In October, 1851 Moses, Nancy and their (then) 9 children left the Brushy Valley area of Anderson County for Missouri, settling near Mercer County. "It was said that Moses felt sure the states were going to war and he, not believing in slavery, decided to move to Missouri, and settled west of Mercer County."

Three sons (Enoch[wounded], Joseph[died], James[wounded]) served in the Civil War on the Union side.

Moses was the father of 12. He died on 22 March 1891, and is buried in the Tennessee Cemetery in Mercer County, Missouri. He left a will.
