Research
These are my own opinions as to those who have made significant contributions to research on my side of the Chilton family. It is not intented to be a comprehensive list and noone loses a prize by not being on here.
Mildred Whitaker
- Probably the first major genealogy effort in the Chilton family was a book published by Mildred Whitaker in 1941, 'The Sheltons of England and America'. She appears to have visited with quite a few of the family members and seems to use her interviews as the sole basis for her work. Unfortunately, it appears that many of the memories about the early family relationships she recorded are incorrect. With no disrespect to her efforts, I do not use her information as the families have been much better documented elsewhere. The point is that her work was accepted at face value for many years and some mistakes may exist in earlier genealogical compilations.
Fred Dorman
- Did the significant early research on the early family and published it in the Virginia Genealogist. There is an interesting article on Ed Chiltons web page that talks about it.
Wallace Hopper
- Wallace followed Dormans line down from Virginia into Tennessee and contributed articles to the Virginia Genealogist. He compiled a small book on the Virginia family and was working on Tennessee when he passed away.
Marjorie Orchard
- Published an exhaustingly researched book on the many descendants of Thomas Boggs Chilton in Missouri and specificly all the Chilton families who ended up in Shannon County, Missouri.
Joe Chilton
- Painstakingly followed the descendants of the Thomas Chilton who died in 1807 in Jefferson County, Tennessee. Based on the 1807 will, there were at least two different James Chiltons and possibly three different Thomas Chiltons in the area who have claimed to be from this same family in various publications. He straightened out an awful lot of confusion.
The following are references to all the known Chilton
articles on the early family taken from The Virginia
Genealogist (1957-1976) published by John Frederick Dorman.
