The ages are just right for Elisha and Jesse, but name and age are wrong for Tabitha to be the Jane mentioned in 1860. However, later cemetary records show that the name is Jane T., probably for Tabitha. Note: Patsy Anderson, 55, born in Virginia, lives with them at this time. She is a good candidate to be Jane Tabitha's mother. -from letter written by Mary Pennington Almaroad.

I found your article on Elisha "Dock" Pennington of NC on page 28 of Pnnington Pedigrees 28-2-1996, to be very interesting. Did you see "Samuel Pennington Line" on page 34? I can offer some information on Malissa Ellen Penningotn d/o Elisha. Malissa was a cousin of my Grandfather's. (Levi Wilson Pennington). Pauline (Jones) Carter, Hays, NC. is a Gr -grandaughter of Elisha's thru his daughter Alice or Lousansa Alice Caroline Pennington who married Jessie Ballard (J. B.) Jones. I located Pauline from an article she had written in Family Histories of Ashe County NC, we have shared information for two or three years. However, we have not been able to agree on Samuel. I included Elisha as a son of Levi Pennington (b. 1794) in Pennington Pedigrees Vol. 26-1-1994 and Vol. 27-1-1995, because Malissa and my Grandfather claimed to be first cousins, and for this to be Elisha had to be a brother to my Gr-Grandfather, Daniel, perhaps, I'm wrong. My Penningtons and Malissa's Grandchildren do not agree with the Samuel "theory". Pauline's recores show Elisha to be the son of Samuel, based on the Eastern Cherokee Applications and research done by a Mae Pennington in Kansas City, MO. Pauline sent me excerpts from the article. Malissa and George Hines live in Shady Valley (Johnson County) Tennessee near where I was raised. After George's death, Malissa was married to James Melvin Sluder for a short time. She lived with her un-married son, Marvin, and just across the creek from us. Two other children of Malissas', Dohl Hines and Rosa Wright also lived near us. Elisha is listed on the 1920 Johnson County Census as living with Malissa in Shady Valley. Dohl Hines has a son, Walter Marvin, who lives about a fifteen minute drive from me, and Rosa has a daughter, Louie (Wright) Brooks, who lives in Bristol, near-by. My mother remembers Malissa and Dohl's wife, Bessie Robinette Hines, is still living in Blountville, but is in "falling health". She does remember a fair amount about Shady Valley and the Penningtons. She always tells me, she used to pick cranberries and black berries on "Uncle Wilse's" farm. The people in Shady called my Grandaddy "Uncle Wilse". He lived to be almost ninety-five and was really a "nice fellow", I guess he was more or less "the community pillar". From Pauline's recores: Elisha Pennington (in the Bible Pennington was recorded with only one "n") 21 July 1832-18 Aug. 1922) m. 23 Jan. 1859 to Tobitha Jane Anderson (19 January 1838-14 Sept. 1899) d/o Jesse Anderson and Nancy ___________. Six children. [I will varify the descendents and record where appropriate in the genealogy... Pmc]
My note: Several years ago, when I first began research on the Elisha Pennington line, I had only heard of malissa, so when I found W. Marvin Hines April 3, 1891-March 21, 1977 M Ellen Nov. 5 1861-Feb 8, 1952 Knowing Walter Marvin Hines was never married, I called Louie Brooks to ask who was this M. Ellen buried beside Marvin and sharing a tombstone. Louie, who was in her seventies, replied, "Well, that's his Mother, Malissa!" I was a bit shocked to hear this was Marvin's Mother so I could only manage,
She's the lady I've been searching for all this time, I didn't know her name was Ellen"! This thought for some reason had never entered my mind. I'm enclosing copies of my information for you and will send Pauline a copy of your article. She knows the Helton area. Perhaps by sharing information we can prove this line. Hope you enjoy the information and I will be anxious to hear from you.
Sincerely, Mary Pennington Almaroad.
Pauline Jones Carter said she remembers him. He petrified her. Would pull children over with a cane
Found the name Jane Tabitha in records and copied at the Virginia Archives in Virginia. Connection not yet made as of July 1996.
Her name may have been Tobitha Jane Anderson according to Pennington Pedigrees, Vol. 27, No. 1, 1995
Buried in Ashe County, in Pennington Anderson Cemetery, on a hill between Lake Brooks and Spencer Powers on Big Helton Creek near Sturgills, North Carolina There is an unmarked grave beside Jane's where relatives think Elisha Pennington may be buried. This grave was visited by Pat McMillion in the summer of 1996.

Papa, as we called my grandpa, had a relative that we called Aunt Ruth. I remember her pretty well, because she spanked me with a small heated up Dutch skillet one time. I did something to make my sister scream…oh, well. I heard stories about Fult, Charlie, Marco and some of the others I cannot remember. Papa used to take me to Uncle Buck and Aunt Betty’s A&W back in the early/mid 1960’s and make the girls get me what ever I wanted. He’d give them a pinch on the way by. All the folks around town seemed to know him and called him “Penn” and sometimes “Penny”. He was quite a storyteller, jokester and a good cook. I can still picture him making a big pot of beans at the stove in their house in North Bend, Oregon. He had this white Panasonic transistor radio that sat on the square water heater next to the stove. The radio had a little lid on the top of it where you could put a couple of pennies or a paper clip. Once he chased me around the house with his false teeth! When I would spend the night, we’d have dinner and then I sit down and watch TV with Papa. He wore these quilted pajama bottoms and a sleeveless t-shirt. You could see where he’d been burned by the mustard gas in WWI around his neck and by his arms. He always made me smile. He and Vista had a 1967 Plymouth Fury III. He’d poke the roof and make the horn honk. It took me 30 years to figure that one out. He used to pull coins out of my ears, too. We lived there with my Dad and Grandma Vista after my folks divorced and Papa passed away in 1968 for about three years until my Dad remarried in 1971.
Aunt Betty’s husband, Uncle Buck, (Harry Walther), was a good sidekick for Papa. What a pair to draw to. I think that they just fed off each other. My Uncle Edsel Colvin (married to Aunt Lea) still tells stories about Papa and Uncle Buck. You can see the light in his eyes. Aunt Lea still tells stories, too. Aunt Betty and Aunt Lea are the only two kids left. Aunt Mary passed away about six months after my Dad. She had been fighting cancer for six years.
Well, I just thought I throw you my two cents about the folks I know about.
